We all remember the past differently, and often we forget many of the problems that we had at the time. Be careful not to be so caught up in your own romanticized version of the past that you let it color your expectations of the future. Often, it's the giving in, the refusal to make the hard choices, the taking the easy way that either keeps us stuck in life. To make true progress we have to move past the easy choices.
